One of the greatest specialists in early music visits the Palace of Arts in the shape of Jordi Savall. The Catalan musician spearheaded the renaissance of the viola da gamba as an instrument in the 1970s, and has continued to broaden the repertoire ever since. With this aim in mind, he established several ensembles, performing music of all genres from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. His exciting thematic productions are assembled with thorough research and are always eagerly awaited; they a...re also regularly tied in with special albums, consisting of a CD and booklet released on Savall’s own record label. The album entitled Music of the Borgia Dynasty – Church and Power in the Renaissance has swept up several awards, something which will surely come as no surprise to those who have had the privilege to hear this fantastic set live. The programme itself follows the history of the family which, from the 11th to the 17th century, gave the world both murderers and patrons of the arts (sometimes in the same person) and reached its peak as a dynasty when one of its members, Rodrigo Borgia, was elected pope in 1492. This concert features a selection of almost 700 years of music, inviting listeners on an imaginary journey in time and space. From Spain, we travel to the cities of Italy, from the Middle Ages – through the music of Renaissance composers Binchois, Dufay, Josquin and Morales – to the Baroque. But we will also be treated to Sephardic, Roman and Turkish music, instrumental and vocal, sacred and secular, intended for dancing or boldly intellectual – all of which illustrates the diversity which already characterised European culture at the time, and the social milieu in which beauty and cruelty went hand in hand.
