“Alice in Organ Land” is how a journalist described Iveta Apkalna who is increasingly well-known on the European organ stage. Her appearance and talents as a performer make the description an apt one. She is remarkably gifted and has brought her often highly individual concert programmes to most the nations of Europe, as well as North America. She has also performed at many major festivals – Lahti, Magadino, Vienna, Luxembourg, Bregenza, Halle Handel Festival and Brema. She has entered and won ...competitions, regularly gives concerts in the Riga Cathedral and was asked to play when Pope John Paul II visited Latvia. She is able to perceive her position within the male dominated world of the organ with enviable clear sightedness. She says she is a “normal person” but is an artist just like all her colleagues who know exactly what they want to communicate to the audience. Many times, she has experienced men noticing her blonde hair and blue eyes rather than her musical and technical ability. But she knows that what is important is not gender but the relationship to music. After many attempts, Iveta Apkalna has finally managed to open the door to establish a deserved place in music life. But from time to time, she still stops and looks around. Following her 2007 MUPA concert, she returns with another exciting programme. Besides works by Bach, Fauré, Liszt and Franck, she is also doing her ambassadorial work for Latvia by bringing works by her compatriots Aivars Kalējs and Arturs Maskats as well as Latvian Christmas songs. She is accompanied by the youthful Riga Kamer Choir that was formed twenty years ago in 1990 and has worked with many international names over the years.
