Selection from works by Iulianus de Spira, Lodovico da Viadana, Franz Liszt, Olivier Messiaen and Zoltán Kodály The deeds, life and faith of St Francis became well known to a wider audience in the 20th century thanks to Franco Zeffirelli’s artistic film, Brother Sun, Sister Moon. Fewer people realise that a great many musicians have identified with the spirit of St Francis over the years. Composers and musicians who belonged to the order can be counted in dozens. The programme of this gala conc...ert leads us into the musical sound world of the Franciscan Order’s inner life. We will hear Gregorian chant sung by the monks, then in performances by a soloist and choir, as well as a version of a Mary song preserved in the Csángó Hungarian folk tradition. János Kájoni was a 17th century Transylvanian humanist polymath who gathered compositions, folk songs and liturgical movements together and notated them in his manuscripts. Two works will be heard from the so-called Kájoni Codex, both by a member of the Italian Minorite order, Lodovico da Viadana. Franz Liszt asked to join the confraters of the Pest Franciscans in 1856 and on his next visit to the city in 1858, was admitted. This led to him composing a number of works with Franciscan theme, among them the Legend in A major and Christ Oratorio, three movements of which, Angelus, Stabat Mater Speciosa and Et Ecce Stella will be heard this evening. Olivier Messiaen, the 20th century “composer theologian” wrote a single musical stage work, his Wagnerian scale opera, St Francis; Zoltán Kodály enriched the repertoire of Franciscan song with the setting of St Francis’s most popular and best known work, The Hymn to the Sun.
