The Hungarian Symphony Orchestra has been led since August 2007 by András Keller who likes to play works, which employ smaller ensembles, which is a great way to create unity in an orchestra. Famous as the first violinist of the world famous Keller Quartet, he has invited conductors and top guest soloists to work with the orchestra in some hugely successful concerts. This concert will definitely be among the highlights of the season because Gilles Apap is one of the most original and free think...ing classical performers these days, perhaps going beyond Nigel Kennedy in this regard. Born in Algeria, this French musician likes to place improvisations into “inviolable” classical pieces and his raw material is drawn from Romanian, Indian, Irish or even Mexican Indian folk music. He achieves this with a breathtaking technique, amazing virtuosity and astonishing imagination. With his improvisations and his views about music, he challenges us with his daring but imperceptibly evokes the performing practises of the past when concerto soloists were given a free hand. No surprise that Yehudi Menuhin called him “the Violinist of the twenty-first century”. The colourful programme begins with a rarely heard piece by György Ligeti written for Hungarian Radio in 1949 when the composer was still a student at the Academy of Music. He orchestrated verbunk music from around 1800 – dances by Lavotta, Bihari, Csermák and Rózsavölgyi – for flute, clarinet and strings.
