Conductor: András Ligeti Elgar: Violin Concerto Mahler: Symphony No. 1 in D major (“The Titan”) It is not generally known but it was primarily a Hungarian contemporary, the legendary conductor János Richter, who brought the art of the refined, late-Romantic English composer Edward Elgar to European attention. Despite this, Elgar is rarely performed in Hungary, which makes this performance of his poetically beautiful Violin Concerto a very special occasion. In the second half of the c...oncert, we will hear Gustav Mahler’s youthful Symphony No. 1 which was inspired by the 1800 novel The Titan by Johann Paul Friedrich Richter, better known as Jean Paul. The composer emulated the book by dividing his work into two parts. The first part (the first two movements) has the title From the Days of Youth, Music of Flowers, Fruit and Thorn. The second (the third and fourth movements): The Human Comedy. The symphony was premiered in Budapest in 1889 by the Philharmonic Society Orchestra, conducted by Mahler.
