The Romeo and Juliet symphony of Hector Berlioz is one of the great emblematic creations of French romantic music. Berlioz himself conducted the work in 1839 at its Paris premiere. Berlioz uses a text by Emile Deschamps, based on Shakespeare’s tragedy of the same name, and fuses the devices of opera, oratorio and symphony to create a remarkable four movement work with an orchestral introduction and choral prologue. In the preface to the score, Berlioz makes it clear that this is not a concert op...era nor a cantata. Berlioz entrusts the most important message, the drama and the interpretation of feelings to the orchestra.
