Zoltán Kodály began writing choral works for children in the 1920s for teaching purposes but his unquenchable artistic imagination and invention transformed his didactic intentions into masterpieces in their own right, such as the great Greeting from Nagyszalonta and Whitsuntide. Kodály frequently turned to Hungarian poetry for his mixed choral works: The Aged, a setting of a poem by Sándor Weöres is one of his most moving vocal works. This concert presents almost all of Kodály’s church music.... The Geneva Psalm CL is filled with Protestant Puritanism and unshakable power, while his Tantum Ergo pieces are for performance during Holy Communion in the Catholic liturgy. Jesus and the Traders is taken from the Gospel of St John and Kodály makes use of the possibilities inherent in mixed choir with dramatic power and the use of poetic interludes. The Missa Brevis for orchestra (and organ respectively) and vocalists was originally a mixed choir work when completed in 1944, and was given the subtitle Tempore belli (times of war). The work is suffused with the craving for peace. The text for Psalmus Hungaricus for tenor soloist, mixed choir, ad libitum children’s choir, orchestra and organ derives from the free paraphrase of the 55th psalm by the 16th century Lutheran preacher Mihály Kecskeméti Vég.
