With its invitation to perform Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra offers an opportunity for the highest-placed Hungarian competitor in the Joseph Szigeti International Violin and Viola Competition, held in September 2012, to debut before a concert audience. The composer’s sole concerto for violin was written for Franz Clement, a renowned violinist of the day, and premièred in Vienna in 1806. The difficulty of the piece lies in its approach to playing the instrume...nt not from a virtuosic perspective, but rather by employing the violin’s more noble and profound techniques of expression. Perhaps the greatest scandal in music history greeted the première of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring in Paris in 1913. The work transformed the concept of rhythmic structure for composers to come, while its vision of the pagan rituals of an imagined ancient Russia still bewitches audiences to this day.
