Written in 1912, the Four Pieces for Orchestra bring an idiosyncratic splash of colour to Béla Bartók’s work as a composer. In this work, Bartók appears to sense and utilise the tonal effects of the impressionist composers for his own. Instead of inscribing strict and consistent melodic lines, the Four Pieces for Orchestra are characterised by these effects, the title of the work implying four short, independent pieces of varying character following one after another. Bartók wrote his two rhaps...odies for violin almost simultaneously in 1928 following completion of his String Quartet No. 5. Originally composed with piano accompaniment, Bartók rearranged the works for orchestra in 1929 (while Rhapsody No. 1 was also arranged for cello and piano in the same year). Rhapsody No. 1, the more popular and better-known piece, was dedicated to Joseph Szigeti, who premièred both versions in 1929 (in Berlin and Königsberg). This evening the violin solo will be played by Ildikó Line, concertmaster of the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Stepping back more than a century in music history, the Eroica Symphony to be heard in the second half of this concert is an expression of heroic fate and the heroic ideal. It is an unrivalled high point in symphonic history, achieving a level of perfection in musical construction which Beethoven himself was subsequently unable to eclipse. Presented by: MRZE
