Schumann wrote the Overture, scherzo and finale (op. 52) not long after his Symphony No. 1 in 1841, so the composer initially regarded the work as his second symphony. However, the large-scale work that eventually did became the Symphony No. 2 (op. 61) was written in 1845-46, a work in which it is easy to sense both the influence of Bach and the composer’s own inner conflicts. In 1850, Schumann moved to Düsseldorf, where – despite the worrying symptoms of illness – he played an active part in ...musical life as his work as a composer appeared to gain momentum. It was at this time that he composed his sole cello concerto within the space of a week, published in printed form in 1854. The soloist for this concert is the young Hungarian cellist István Várdai, a winner of several international competitions. Presented by: MR Music Groups
