Following his Requiem, which won a "Composition of the Year” award in 2013, Péter Zombola has again written a large-scale liturgical piece. His Latin-language Passion for choir and orchestra does not follow the models of Bach's time, but is closer to more archaic forms of the passion genre such as the 15th century motet passion. There are no soloists, and the biblical text is sung exclusively by a choir. The larger sections of the composition - which is framed by an orchestral prelude and postlu...de - are marked out at dramatic climaxes by instrumental interludes, allowing space and time for reflection, in which the composer attempts to find musical expression for paradoxes such as "finite and infinite, varying and unvarying.”
