“Mass for troubled times” is how Joseph Haydn subtitled his Mass in D minor, which was written during the Napoleonic wars. According to legend, Haydn introduced fanfares into the Benedictus when he heard the news in August 1798 of the great naval battle in Abu Qir. But why is such a dramatic and dark piece being programmed before Christmas in the concert hall? Well, like so many compositions in a minor key, this masterpiece also begins in darkness but arrives in brightness, so like Christmas it... is also a celebration of the dawning of light. The orchestra and soloists are joined by the Hungarian National Choir, who in 2011 are celebrating their twenty fifth anniversary. The nature of the second half of the concert is a surprise: but as this is the work of Zoltán Kocsis, we will not be disappointed. It makes for a meaningful but entertaining evening.
