Verdi first conceived of the Requiem to mark the death of Rossini but five years later, following the death of his friend Alessandro Manzoni, he sat down to complete what is one of the most variegated, moving and perhaps dramatic requiem masses in musical literature. The work overpowers its liturgical function and is now primarily a concert hall piece. For the last 150 years, it has been a true test piece for Italian conductors. These include Carlo Montanaro, who began his career as a violinist ...in the Maggio Musicale Orchestra at Zubin Mehta’s Florence festival, and it was Mehta who discovered him. He also played under Muti, Giulini, Pretre, Ozawa and Maazel before he became interested in conducting. He is now busy worldwide as a guest conductor often working in Italian bel canto opera.
