The Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra greets this evening’s audience with an interesting programme. An oratorio written fifty years ago is performed as a tribute to composer and respected teacher Ferenc Farkas who passed away on October 10th, 2000 at the age of 95. His composition is based on five Latin language verses by Janus Pannonius and will be performed with the collaboration of the Hungarian National Choir. This will be followed by a piece by one of the finest Slovak composers of ...the 20th century Eugen Suchoň (1908–1993), who himself also enjoyed a long life. His Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra will feature as soloist Thomas Christian. The second half of the concert will feature the two outer works from Images pour orchestra by Debussy, Gigues and Rondes de printemps played by Zoltán Kocsis and the orchestra. Gigues was begun in 1909 and completed in 1912 by André Caplet who was responsible for the orchestration. This is a rarely heard work partly because it calls for an oboe d’amore which is a rarity these days, and also because it is exceptionally difficult to perform. Rondes de printemps was never a success and Debussy’s enemies frequently pointed to this work as evidence that the composer’s creative powers were waning. The music material is familiar, a working of the familiar little song “Nous n’irons plus au bois”. The two Debussy pieces surround Rachmaninov’s symphonic poem from 1909, The Isle of the Dead inspired by a picture by the 19th century Swiss painter Arnold Böcklin. This work is the first example of the composer employing the Dies Irae theme, which we find in numerous subsequent works.
