Conductor: Zoltán Kocsis Soloists: András Palerdi, Ildikó Komlósi – singers Haydn: Symphony in D major (“Le Matin”), Hob. I:6 Schubert: Symphony No. 3 in D major, D. 200 Bartók: Bluebeard’s Castle The Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra traditionally gets its season underway on or close to the anniversary of the death of Béla Bartók. The 2009–2010 season, as part of the Haydn year, begins with the great Austrian composer’s “Le Matin” symphony, his first “time of day symphony”, written... at the age of twenty-nine in 1761. This is followed by another work in the same key, Schubert’s Symphony in D major, which was composed in 1815. Schubert also had a brief relationship with the Esterházy family, where Haydn had famously served for over three decades. This symphony was only performed complete many years after the composer’s death in 1881. The second half of the concert sees a concert performance of Bartók’s only opera, Bluebeard’s Castle with two supreme vocal soloists: András Palerdi and Ildikó Komlósi who in March 2009, also partnered László Polgár in a performance of the opera. Zoltán Kocsis and his ensemble might give a penetrating and illuminating new interpretation of this familiar work.
