Conductor: Mátyás Antal Featuring: Tünde Szabóki, Zoltán Nyári – singers, Jenő Jandó – piano, Hungarian National Choir (choirmaster: Mátyás Antal), MR Children’s Choir (choirmaster: Gabriella Thész) Stravinsky: Symphony of Psalms Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No. 1 in D flat major, op. 10 Webber: Requiem This concert features an all 20th century programme, ranging from Prokofiev’s 1911 concerto to Webber’s 1984 work. Stravinsky wrote his Symphony of Psalms in 1930 for the fiftieth anniversary o...f the Boston Symphony Orchestra, led by Serge Koussevitzsky. Prokofiev was only twenty when he wrote his revolutionary Piano Concerto No. 1 and he had the audacity to programme this at his diploma concert rather than the expected classical concerto. As a result he caught the notoriously strict judges off guard and they awarded him first prize. The concerto is only fifteen minutes long and its four movements follow without a break. Within these narrow confines, Prokofiev manages to present a diverse range of characters from the grandiose to the lyrical and there are also plenty examples of subtle musical irony which was to become the composer’s most important hallmark. Andrew Lloyd Webber, composer of hit musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita and Cats decided in 1984 to write a “serious” piece of church music. He drew on the English church tradition, Fauré’s Requiem and Orff’s Carmina Burana and the end result showed his versatility as a composer. The melodic world, colourful orchestration and lively rhythms of his Requiem require no further commentary.
