Conductor: Sakari Oramo Featuring: Anu Komsi – soprano Sibelius: En Saga, op. 9 Debussy–Oramo: Chansons de jeunesse: Pantomime Coquetterie posthume Pierrot Apparition Clair de Lune Musique R. Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra, op. 30 Sakari Oramo is the music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) and principal conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. From the 2008–2009 season, he will be chief conductor and artistic advisor to th...e Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra as well. He launches this concert with a work by indisputably the finest of all Finnish composers, Jean Sibelius. Written in 1892, En Saga is a symphonic poem which together with Finlandia established his international reputation. Its relatively economic means and folk tone with its ability to say a great deal with few words is something more familiar than exotic to Hungarians. When it was premièred in Helsinki in 1893 with the composer conducting, it was not a success and so Sibelius revised it, primarily altering the orchestration. In this new version, it was soon warmly received. The concert continues in a most interesting fashion, with some youthful Debussy songs with piano accompaniment in orchestral arrangements by the conductor. The soloist will be another internationally renowned Finn, Anu Komsi who incidentally is also Oramo’s wife. The concert concludes with another symphonic poem. Richard Strauss wrote his imposing, one hour work Also Sprach Zarathustra in 1896 which, in the words of the composer, “pays homage to the genius of Nietzsche”.
