Conductor: Zoltán Kocsis Featuring: Hungarian National Choir (choirmaster: Mátyás Antal), MR Children’s Choir (choirmaster: Gabriella Thész) Bartók: Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste Sándor Szokolay: Pure flames from end October – world première Béla Bartók composed his great work Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste in 1936 for the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Chamber Orchestra Basel. It was premièred by the ensemble and its conductor Paul Sacher the following year.... It is a tremendous work, and enjoyed a success that few other 20th century works ever matched, and is replete with unique colours and effects which at the time of their première, were extremely novel. In recent years, Zoltán Kocsis and the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra have performed it at the Budapest Academy of Music, in Szombathely and Berlin but now perform it at the Palace of Arts for the first time. Since Bartók’s music is the mother tongue of both conductor and ensemble, we can rest assured that this performance of Music will be another exciting and authentic interpretation. Sándor Szokolay was twenty five in 1956 when the revolution broke out and now, 52 years later, he has written a new work in its memory which will receive its world première this evening.
