Conductor: Zoltán Kocsis Featuring: Andrea Csereklyei, Klára Kolonits, Andrea Meláth, Tibor Szappanos, Tamás Bátor – singers, Hungarian National Choir (choirmaster: Mátyás Antal) J. S. Bach: Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068 Orchestral Suite No. 4 in D major, BWV 1069 Nun ist das Heil und die Kraft – cantata, BWV 50 Magnificat (in D major), BWV 243 The first two works in the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra’s Bach programme, the Orchestral Suites Nos. 3 and 4 were pro...bably composed in Leipzig around 1730. The orchestral suite was one of the most popular genres of the 18th century and as its name implies, it features a sequence of dance character pieces. While the movements of suites for solo instruments followed a set pattern, orchestral suites tended to be freer and it was up to the composer to decide the order as he saw fit. This freedom is apparent not only in the sequence of movements but also with the spirit of the work. The orchestral suite is music written expressly to entertain. After the interval we shall hear first a four minute cantata, then one of Bach’s major works, his Magnificat which was composed in Leipzig in 1723 and features some fine guest soloists.
