Conductor: Antal Mátyás Verdi: Requiem Featuring: Marine Deinyan, Andrea Ulbrich, Tamás Kóbor, Peter Mikuláš – singers, Hungarian National Choir (choirmaster: Mátyás Antal), MR Choir (choirmaster: Kálmán Strausz) The idea for composing a requiem mass occurred to Giuseppe Verdi in 1868 after he first learned of Rossini’s death. His initial idea was for various living Italian composers to each write a movement for a work to be performed on the first anniversary of Rossini’s passing. It wa...s then to be performed each year on that day. Verdi managed to complete his own share of the work, the Libera Me and when it was clear that there was no one to write the Dies Irae he also set about sketching that. The project rather collapsed but a few years later, a music critic friend of Verdi persuaded him to complete the work himself. Work was accelerated when Verdi’s good friend Alessandro Manzoni died in 1873. A leading figure of the Italian Risorgimento he was one of the leaders in the movement to expel Austria and unite Italy. Verdi decided that the work should be entirely dedicated to his friend’s memory and on May 22nd 1874, it received its premiere performance at the Saint Mark’s Church in Milan. Since then it has enjoyed continuous popularity throughout the world. The Requiem will be performed by the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir with superb soloists, an Armenian, a Slovak and two Hungarian singers.
