Conductor: Zoltán Kocsis Featuring: Tamás Velenczei – trumpet Bartók: Two Pictures, op. 10 Haydn: Trumpet Concerto in E flat major, Hob. VIIe:1 Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 2 in C minor, op. 17 Béla Bartók’s early work Two Pictures was written in 1910 and premièred in 1913. It is cast in two contrasting orchestral movements. The first, Blossoming, exhibits subtle and transparent orchestration, soft pastel colours and melodic shaping that betray the influence of Debussy. The second movement... called Village Dance is a grotesque contrast of this vision-like picture of nature. Surprising rhythms, unique harmonies and immense orchestral sonority prevail in this demonic dance fantasy. Written in 1796, this was the last instrumental concerto Joseph Haydn was ever to write. He composed it for the trumpeter at the Vienna court, Anton Weidinger, who created a new kind of valve trumpet which vastly increased its technical possibilities. Tonight’s soloist will be Tamás Velenczei, solo trumpeter of the Berlin Philharmonic. Piotr Tchaikovsky composed his Symphony No. 2 in 1872. It was a tremendous success at its première but eight years later, the composer radically revised it, shortening it by five minutes as well.
