Conductor: Zoltán Kocsis Bartók: Suite No. 2, op. 4 Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, op. 37 Brahms: Symphony No. 1 in C minor, op. 68 The Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra traditionally stages its season opening concert on, or close, to the date of Bartók’s death. Tonight, this concert falls on the eve of the anniversary and naturally, the 2007–2008 season is to be launched with a Bartók work. The four movement Suite No. 2 is an early work, written between 1905 and 190...7. It was premiered in 1909 in Budapest. Beethoven composed his Piano Concerto No. 3 in 1800. The soloist will be the thirty year old, St Petersburg born Alexei Volodin whose international career was launched in 2003 with victory at the Zurich Géza Anda Competition. Since then he has been regularly invited as a guest soloist to perform with many distinguished ensembles, such as the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has worked with the likes of Riccardo Chailly, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Valery Gergiev, Carlo Rizzi and David Zinman. This is the first time he performes with Zoltán Kocsis and the National Philharmonic Orchestra. After the break, we will hear another C minor composition: the Symphony No. 1 by Johannes Brahms in which we find the influence of both Beethoven and Wagner. Brahms only completed it relatively late in his career, at the age of forty three, in 1876.
