Debussy composed The Prodigal Son at the age of 22. Rarely heard in concert, the work won him the Prix de Rome, a prestigious accolade in France. But how does it come to be performed alongside Tchaikovsky? It was the latter's patron, Nadezhda von Meck, who asked the young Debussy to accompany her on European travels and to teach her piano - naturally in exchange for generous financial support - in precisely the years prior to composition of the cantata to be heard here. In the first half of the ...concert, we will hear two of the Russian composer's best-known works. For the performance of one of the most popular piano concertos in the repertoire, we can admire the playing of Kirill Gerstein, a winner of multiple competitions and awards who was born in the Russian city of Voronezh, but is now an American citizen.
