It has been almost eight years since Alexei Volodin, winner of the Concours Géza Anda piano competition in Zurich, played Beethoven's Piano Concerto in C minor at the season-opening concert of the Hungarian National Philharmonic. Then still only 30 years old, he already had the ability to dazzle his audience. In truth, however, he is a representative of the great tradition of Russian piano playing, and it is in this capacity that he now performs the concerto Prokofiev was commissioned to write b...y the concert pianist and war invalid Paul Wittgenstein. Britten, Hindemith, Korngold, Richard Strauss and Ravel all composed piano concertos for the left hand which were once considered unplayable.
