In this unusual concert programme, rarely heard works by Brazil's premier composer will be performed alongside music by J.S. Bach, who lived some 200 years earlier. The nine Bachianas brasileiras by Heitor Villa-Lobos are an exotic series of orchestral suites, the movements of which bear both a "Bachian” and a Brazilian title, while the music itself melds characteristic elements of Brazilian music with Baroque forms, counterpoint and harmonies. There can scarcely be a musician better equipped to... bring Villa-Lobos's musical world authentically to life than Jean Louis Steuerman, who has performed before with the Hungarian National Philharmonic and is himself Brazilian. The pianist is also an excellent interpreter of Bach, having made his initial breakthrough to the international elite in a Bach competition in 1972. The other unusual item on the programme is the sixth piece in Villa-Lobos' Choros series, inspired by an improvisation performed on African and European instruments by Brazilian street musicians.
