Zoltán Kocsis and the Hungarian National Philharmonic devote particular attention to promoting the symphonic poems and operas of Richard Strauss, whether they are parts of the standard musical repertoire or neglected works. This concert presents two of Strauss's neglected or seldom-played compositions. The symphonic poem Aus Italien Strauss's first in the genre and was described by the composer himself as revolutionary. Composed in 1886 based on his experiences in Italy, Strauss dubbed the... work a symphonic fantasy and wrote a specific programme to accompany it. Interestingly, Strauss incorporated the famous tune Funiculì, Funiculà into the work as a Neapolitan folk song, when it was in fact a piece written by Luigi Denza, who later sued Strauss and won.
The incidental music to the stage play Le Bourgeois gentilhomme was composed based on an idea from Strauss's librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal, who wished to produce an adapted version of Molière's work from 1670. He requested Strauss to write the music, who duly completed a suite in true neoclassical style in 1917. The incidental music paraphrases the Baroque music of the 17th and 18th centuries in nine movements, re-imagining it with 20th century eyes and ears, and even drawing on the work of Jean-Baptiste Lully, the French court composer who provided the music for Molière's original play.
