The music and musicians of Turkey are insufficiently familiar to us, and yet numerous outstanding Turkish performers perform concerts worldwide. At this concert we will get to know two of them, while also savouring a taste of the country's own national music. As an overture, the orchestra will perform a work by Ahmed Adnan Saygun, a composer as important to Turkey as Bartók is to Hungary or Sibelius to Finland. Composed in 1975, Ritual Dance takes a unique approach to blending Western comp...osed music with elements of authentic Turkish folk tradition.
The last piano concerto of Camille Saint-Saëns, one of the leading figures on the 19th century French music scene, is exciting for other reasons. The composer wrote the piece in Luxor in 1896, on a winter vacation in Egypt, and it blends elements of several musical worlds outside Europe. Born in 1976, Emre Elivar studied under a scholarship in Germany and now lives in Berlin. His repertoire is defined by works that are both intellectually and technically demanding, and it was not by chance that he has been singled out by one of the world's major record labels.
Conductor for the evening is Işın Metin, artistic director of the Symphony Orchestra of Bilkent University, which cherishes the legacy of Adnan Saygun. The second half of the concert presents one of the emblematic works of Romantic symphonic music, in which Robert Schumann is said to portray the experiences and impressions he gained on a journey through the Rhineland with his wife Clara, as the subtitle of the work suggests.
