Of the numerous internationally renowned artists performing this season with the Hungarian National Philharmonic, Kun-Woo Paik, born in 1946 and living in Paris, perfected his skills under greats such as Wilhelm Kempff and Ilona Kabos, the latter a pupil of Árpád Szendy. A significant proportion of his repertoire comprises rarely played works: of some 25 albums, several are dedicated to the concertos and other piano works of Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Fauré and Florent Schmitt. In addition t...o recording Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas, he also occasionally performs music by Busoni. The piano concerto by Scriabin, completed by the Russian composer at the age of 24 in 1896, is likewise only rarely heard in concert.
Tchaikovsky's rightly popular Slavonic March was written 20 years earlier, at the time of the war between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian-backed Serbia, visualizing this historical conflict with almost filmic power. The second half of the concert presents Mozart's Mass in C major, one of the best-known oratorios in the repertoire which was likewise a youthful work, written when the composer was aged 23. Like most musical works of the period, its nickname "Coronation” was not acquired from its composer, but probably "stuck” in the early 19th century, when the imperial court in Vienna would prefer this imposing mass to be performed at coronations and other major celebrations.
