Song of the Fates is based on an extract from Goethe’s drama Iphigenia in Tauris, which Brahms set to music in 1882 in Meiningen. Here one of Germany’s finest orchestras would emerge under the patronage of Georg II, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, a great champion of the theatre and music. This orchestra premièred several Brahms works, among them the Symphony No. 4 from 1885, a peak of Brahms’ musical achievement. The fourth movement is a large-scale set of variations on a harmonic series, in the form o...f a Baroque passacaglia. The composer’s sole concerto for violin is closely associated with one of the great violinists of the 19th century, the Hungarian-born Joseph Joachim, who played it in Budapest in the year of its première in 1879. Regarding the performance, the critic Jenő Péterfy said of Brahms that “virtuoso fancy tricks do not sparkle in the firmament of his art”. Presented by: Hungarian National Philharmonic
