Having overcome his inhibitions about the symphony as a genre and stepped out of the shadow of Beethoven with his monumental Symphony No. 1, Brahms immediately began work on a second. Instead of the 14 years he took to compose the first, he completed the Symphony No. 2 within a year after settling in Vienna, and the work was premièred by the Vienna Philharmonic under Győr-born Hans Richter. “It is all rippling streams, blue sky, sunshine and cool green shadows," wrote one of Brahms’ friends whe...n describing the work. The Piano Concerto in D minor, which began life as a symphony, was first performed by the 25-year-old composer himself in Hanover. The melancholy Tragic Overture was written more than 20 years later as a companion piece to the joyful and witty Academic Festival Overture. As Brahms himself observed of the two works: one laughs, while the other cries. The piano concerto this evening will be heard in an interpretation by Balázs Fülei, winner of the Junior Prima Prize in 2010, the Artisjus Prize in 2011, and an award from the Solti Foundation in 2013.
