A series of four concerts to mark the 180th anniversary of the birth of Brahms features almost all of the German Romantic composer’s symphonic works. The Academic Festival Overture was written by Brahms – with a little persuasion – to thank the University of Breslau for the noble gesture of awarding him with an honorary doctorate. The Double Concerto in A minor, Brahms’ last orchestral work, carries the characteristics of both symphonic and chamber music; it was first performed by Joseph Joachim... and Robert Hausmann, a now forgotten cellist who was considered the best on the instrument in his day. The Symphony No. 1 is an encyclopaedic composition, perhaps the greatest undertaking among the composer’s four symphonies, which some contemporaries dubbed “Beethoven’s Tenth”. Some features of the first movement recall Beethoven’s fifth symphony, while Brahms develops a broad melody in the fourth movement related to that of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, crowning the work with a cathartic climax.
