The number nine has a peculiar significance among composers who followed Beethoven. Fate did not provide Dvořák, Mahler or Anton Bruckner the time to write a tenth symphony: in each case, the ninth was their last. Moreover, Bruckner was never even able to complete his swansong, finishing only three of the four movements of his Symphony No. 9. When he saw that he would be unable to apply the final touches to his symphony, his plan was to substitute the Te Deum as a finale. This evening’s conducto...r Hubert Soudant took over as music director of the Utrecht Symphony Orchestra at the age of 28. For several years, he led both the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire and the Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg. He also has a close connection with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, where he became principal guest conductor in 1999 and music director from 2004. He has recorded a number of Bruckner symphonies, among them the ninth to be heard this evening. Presented by: Hungarian National Philharmonic
