The Hungarian National Philharmonic welcomes a star soloist for its end-of-season concert. Born in 1969, the Russian pianist Boris Berezovsky is an outstanding interpreter of the Russian piano repertoire. A few years ago, he recorded Rachmaninoff’s piano concertos, while on one of his latest albums he honours the memory of Nikolai Medtner, the forgotten virtuoso of Russian romanticism who remained in the shadow of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin. Berezovsky has even initiated an international festival... in Medtner’s memory. This evening, the Georgian-born pianist will join Zoltán Kocsis and his orchestra to perform the concerto Rachmaninoff took with him on his first trip across the Atlantic in 1909, and which he performed himself with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of its then freshly appointed music director Gustav Mahler. Though undoubtedly overshadowed by his enormously popular Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, the work is similarly characterised by soaring melodies and rich, refined and varied orchestration, while also owing much to the music of the Eastern Orthodox Church. In the second half of the evening, the audience will hear the Brahms symphony which one of the composer’s friends described as “all blue sky, rippling streams, sunshine and cool shadows.” In contrast to the austere and sombre Symphony No. 1, the work was an overwhelming success at its première, which was given by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Hans Richter in late 1877. Ending in a glorification of Beethoven, this wonderfully rich and characterful piece has become a staple at the world’s concert halls ever since. Presented by: Hungarian National Philharmonic
