The course of English music is unusual: while the country has remained one of the driving forces in Europe’s musical life, many people are of the opinion that no significant English composer has been born since Henry Purcell. Whether this is really true or not is up for debate, but we can be certain that Hungarian audiences rarely come into live and direct contact with the music from the island nation composed in the 300 years since the death of the baroque master. It is precisely for this reaso...n that this evening is worthy of special attention, as the orchestra will be performing a set of works entirely by English composers with the collaboration of an internationally renowned British conductor and a pianist born in Brazil in 1949. The career of Jean Louis Steuerman took off in the 1970s, and the pianist has been performing with a host of renowned conductors and orchestras ever since. Here in Budapest, he will play a work possibly that has never been heard in Hungary before in Benjamin Britten’s Piano Concerto. Written in 1938 when the composer was just 24 years old, the work was premièred at the famous Promenade (Proms) concert series in London. The concert begins with a symphonic tone poem inspired by the sound of the first cuckoo of spring composed by Frederick Delius 25 years earlier at a time – in the 1910s – when both Bartók and Kodály were taking an increasing interest in the English composer. Edward Elgar’s Symphony No. 2 also originates from this period, a work which the composer subtitled “the passionate pilgrimage of the soul” and dedicated to the memory of King Edward VII. The programme will be conducted by James Judd, who has gained great distinction as the assistant of Lorin Maazel at the Cleveland Orchestra, associate musical director of the European Union Youth Orchestra and music director of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
