A violin concerto paired with an opera? It is not a combination the music lover would be likely to find elsewhere in the world, whether in London, New York or Paris. In the first half of the concert, the audience will hear Tchaikovsky’s evergreen classic, which was to have been premièred by the Veszprém-born, later Saint Petersburg-based teacher Leopold Auer in 1881, had he not declared it unplayable. It is a piece quickly mastered by young violin prodigies, however, such as Kazakhstan-born Mira... Tuyakbayeva – for whom this will not be the first concert performance of the work. Among the most interesting of a young generation of violinists, Tuyakbayeva has – according to the noted conductor Vladimir Fedoseyev – a very personal playing style and a personality saturated in music. The second half of the concert will feature one of the most enchanting operas in music history, which Maurice Ravel presented to the public in 1925. The story concerns a rude little child who is not willing to do his homework. After his mother scolds him, the boy throws a tantrum and begins destroying things in his room. The “victims” of his rampage, the objects in his room, then come to life and band together so that they no longer have to tolerate their owner’s mischief. The chairs move away from him and begin to dance, the fairy princess flies out of the storybook, and the pussycat and the tomcat sing a duet together. The “residents” of the garden join in: the trees with their trunks injured by the boy’s penknife whimper in pain, the dragonfly mourns its partner pinned to a board, and the squirrel reproaches the boy. The boy calls his mother, but the vengeful animals and objects approach threateningly, and a terrible skirmish begins. Eventually the boy bandages the wounded squirrel’s paw and, witnessing his kind behaviour, everyone forgives him. Together, they call his mother, who embraces the child lovingly.
