Regarded as the father of Czech music, Bedřich Smetana's Vitava is among his best-known works – if not the best known. Yet few people know that this natural music, which follows the route of the river from its source to confluence with the Elba, is just part of an expansive cycle of six symphonies composed between 1874 and 1879. Each piece describes a historical event, legend or natural wonder of Smetana's homeland, following the template laid down by Liszt. The work, which fills the entire even...ing and promises to be one of the most fascinating and unusual of the season, will be conducted by Libor Pešek, an avid promoter of perhaps unfamiliar Czech composers and their music. Presented by: Hungarian National Philharmonic
