This concert is dedicated to the memory of the 1956 uprising and fight for freedom of the Hungarian people, which took place 55 years ago to the day. Boldizsár Csíky premiered Gulag in Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca, Romania) in 2008, intending it as a “symphonic memorial” to those that suffered the horrors of war and oppression. In the closing section, the male choir quotes from Psalm 130: “Out of the depths, I cry to you, O Lord.” Shostakovich wrote his Cello Concerto No. 1 three years after the event...s in Budapest, dedicating the work to his friend Mstislav Rostropovich. This extremely difficult piece will be performed on this occasion by one of the leading cellists in the world. The interval will be followed by the Requiem Mass, Mozart's final, unfinished masterpiece and one of the most moving and uplifting pieces of music ever written.
