Celebrated author Sándor Márai closes the first part of his novel Confessions of a Bourgeois with the words “They have killed the heir to the throne”. The event signals the end of one era and the beginning of another. On one hand, we have the celebratory family meal accompanied by distant Gypsy music on an idyllic terrace; while on the other there are millions of dead, violence and a the city throbbing with aggression. The two works to be heard in this concert were also written on this precipice... between the ages. Gustav Mahler, who died 100 years ago, composed his symphonic song cycle on in the final years of peace and happiness in 1909. The work is based on Hans Bethge's The Chinese Flute, a collection of translations into German of Oriental poetry. The vocal solos of the one-hour masterpiece will be performed by the internationally renowned Ildikó Komlósi, alongside Serb lyric tenor Zoran Todorovič, who regularly appears in some of the world's finest opera houses. Born 130 years ago, Béla Bartók wrote his pantomime ballet The Miraculous Mandarin as a first cry of anguish in a century of machines and technology.
