A "concert opera" with a Biblical theme, this Ferenc Liszt oratorio lasts a total of three hours and was written in 1865 for choir, soloists, mixed and children's choirs, and an orchestra expanded to include a harmonium, organ and bells. Although its language is German, the composer's close ties to Hungary, along with his religious beliefs, influenced the choice of theme. The two-part oratorio chronicles events in the life of the daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary, born in 1207. The work prem...ièred in Hungarian translation by Kornél Ábrányi in the Pesti Vigadó Theatre on 15 August 1865. This concert is recorded in a famous engraving in which Liszt appears in the conductor's pulpit in his abbé robes.
