One possible title for this concert would be "Spanish Connection". Although Maurice Ravel's mother was Basque, he left the village of his birth at the foot of the Pyrenées for Paris aged just a few months. Despite this, he was always open not only to the Rococo and Galant styles, but also to Spanish and other exotic themes. Today, Ravel is celebrated for bringing new perspectives to the structuring and combination of musical textures. His best known composition, Bolero is also a Spanish dance in... which Ravel demonstrates how a simple melody can be enriched and enlivened solely through colourful use of the orchestra. Between Pavane, written to mark the death of the Spanish princess, and his piano concerto showing influences of Mozart, Saint-Saëns and jazz, the work of Ravel's elder contemporary Claude Debussy will also be performed in the form of Images from his Iberia orchestral tryptichon. The concert soloist is Argentine pianist Ingrid Fliter, a performer not unfamiliar to Hungarian audiences. Presented by: The Hungarian National Philharmonic
