The UMZE Chamber Ensemble was formed in 1996 by the front man of the Amadinda Percussion Group Zoltán Rácz with composer-conductor László Tihanyi and music historian András Wilheim. They took as their model the New Hungarian Music Society, formed in 1911 by Bartók, Kodály and Leó Weiner (which existed only briefly) as well as contemporary modern music groups like the Ensemble Modern and the Ensemble Intercontemporain. The UMZE Chamber Ensemble also aims to maintain 20th century classical composi...tions in the repertoire and to bring the latest works by Hungarian and international composers to Hungarian audiences. In 1997, the ensemble made its debut at the Budapest Autumn Festival, then in early 2006 they formed the New Hungarian Music Society with seventeen musicians, the founders of which included György Ligeti, András Szőllősy, György Kurtág, László Dobszay, Ferenc Rados, Miklós Perényi, Péter Eötvös, Zoltán Jeney and László Vidovszky. Also in 2006, UMZE created the concert series Hommage à Ligeti – in organisation by the Palace of Arts – with the intention of it becoming a new tradition. With musical direction by Zoltán Rácz, the cream of Hungarian musical life performs each year (presumably until 2012) a concert of music by György Ligeti (who died in 2006) around his birthday on May 28th. This year’s programme again presents a cross section from different creative periods by one of the finest composers of the 20th century.
