Conductor: James Levine Production: Robert Lepage Featuring: Marcello Giordani, Susan Graham, John Relyea The composition defined as a dramatic legend builds on three singers who embody the three main characters of the story: Faust (tenor), Mephisto (bass) and Margaret (mezzo-soprano). The choir and the rather large orchestra carry an important role in the music. The first venue in the four parts divided in two acts is Hungary, obviously identified by the characteristic peasant dance and th...e soldiers’ Rákóczi march. That is followed by the meeting of Faust and Mephisto, and then of Faust and Margaret. The last scene is the dramatic peak when Faust makes a deal with the devil and Margaret finds peace for her soul in heaven. Robert Lepage, one of the most creative directors of the Metropolitan, masterfully grasps the Berliozian idea of Good and Evil, Nature and Woman. Using unearthly projections, he creates a vision of the work in which art and technology are perfectly forged together. “The production focuses on the singers”, said Lepage. “Still, the view and the stage technology have a motion that accompanies the events taking place on stage.” The title role is taken by the multi-talented bel canto tenor Marcello Giordani who made his debut at the MET in 2007 as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor. “He connected the various phases in the role of Faust as perhaps no one else in the world. He changed vocal registers unnoticed and sang the high C sharp clearly without falsetto”, critics said earlier. Margaret is played by Susan Graham who was born in New Mexico. “Sparkling musicality and an artistic voice separates Susan Graham from the majority of singers”, Opera News wrote earlier.
