This concert by the MÁV Symphony Orchestra features two masterpieces by Antonín Dvořák: his Cello Concerto and his Symphony No. 7, inspired by Brahms. Performing alongside this storied orchestra on this occasion, we will get to hear two Hungarian guest artists who have achieved tremendous success abroad, although it is always a great pleasure to see them again here at home too: cellist László Fenyő and conductor Gábor Káli.
In 1891, the great Czech composer Antonín Dvořák received and accepted an invitation to serve as the director of New York's newly established National Conservatory of Music. In addition to his carrying out his duties there, he also studied Native American folk songs and African-American spirituals. This new knowledge and constant homesickness inspired the works he composed in the United States: His Symphony No. 9 ("From the New World"), his String Quartet No. 12 in F major ("American") and... the Cello Concerto in B minor. He worked on the latter in the winter of 1894/95, but the première took place on 19 March 1896, in London, after his return to Europe. Dating from a good decade earlier, his Symphony No. 7 was heavily influenced by Brahms's Third Symphony. Its first theme, however, came to him at the Prague railway station, when a festive train full of his countrymen rolled in from Budapest.
Both the conductor and the soloist for the concert are guest artists returning home to Hungary. Gábor Káli commenced his studies in Budapest and completed them in Berlin, taking part in several international competitions and taking first prize at the Hong Kong International Conducting Competition in 2018. Although he conducts in the opera houses of Germany's largest cities, we also frequently get the chance to welcome on the podium when he appears here with Hungarian orchestras.
László Fenyő, the soloist for Dvořák's Cello Concerto, studied at Budapest's Liszt Academy under László Mező. He later went on to earn his master's degree at the music academy in Lübeck. In 2004, he won first prize at the Pablo Casal International Cello Competition. He also lives in Germany, serving as a professor at the Karlsruhe Academy of Music and performing many concerts around the world. He often visits Hungary as a soloist and as a member of prestigious chamber ensembles.
