György Vashegyi and his period instrument playing Orfeo Orchestra and Purcell Choir now present a Christmas concert tribute to Georg Friedrich Handel, who died 250 years ago. Handel’s oratorio was premièred in Dublin in 1742 and was written for concert performance, rather than liturgical use. In three parts, it was advertised as a sacred entertainment. It has been immensely popular ever since, with its interesting melodies, exciting harmonies, transparent counterpoint and its varied structure, a...lternating arias, choral movements and instrumental numbers. So it is not just because of the Hallelujah Chorus that it has been so widely performed over the last two centuries, particularly during Advent. Its libretto is unusual because instead of a story, we have a series of movements discussing the Christian notion of redemption. The English language text derives from the Bible, from the Prophesies of the Old Testament, through the life of Jesus to the Resurrection. We are guaranteed a superb performance of this wonderfully rich and imaginative work, since György Vashegyi and the ensembles he founded in the early 1990s have already contributed many memorably performances of Baroque oratorio, including several Handel works, as well as Hungarian premières.
