Born in 1926, György Kurtág studied from 1940 in Timişoara. From 1946, he was enrolled at the Budapest Academy of Music, where he was professor of chamber music until 1986 and continued to hold a limited number of classes until 1993. The Hungarian composer won the Kossuth Prize in 1973 and was honoured by the Republic of France in 1985, while his other awards include the Herder, Feltrinelli and Hölderlin prizes. He has spent the past decade and a half outside Hungary, settling in France with his... wife in 2002.
