The Győr Philharmonic Orchestra, which was founded by the father of famous conductor Hans Richter and led since 1997 by Ádám Medveczky brings to the Palace of Arts a unique programme. A mass and an opera in a single evening? These are two genres light years apart – at least where mood, theme and function is concerned. But this pairing has been well considered. Anyone who knows György Orbán’s thirteen masses or Hungarian language passions knows that there is no such thing for the sixty two year o...ld composer as sacred and profane music. For him a mass movement can have a dance character, spiced with humour, and Jesus and Mary Magdalene can sing a love duet. As he says, “I tend to be a musical omnivore” and there is a wide spectrum of styles which he likes and undertakes “with great joy” in a tonal language. The interesting feature of his tenth mass is that there is a children’s song hidden in it for the listeners, and in terms of genre, is close to Haydn’s style of concert masses. The best known work of Pietro Mascagni is his one act opera Cavalleria Rusticana which was first played in Budapest, conducted by Gustav Mahler, in the same year as its world première in 1890. In this concert hall performance, each of the soloists has vast experience on the musical stage and the majority are members of the Hungarian State Opera House.
