Conductor: Ádám Medveczky Featuring: Jenő Jandó – piano Dvořák: Carnival Overture, op. 92 Iván Madarász: Piano Concerto No. 2 – world première Mussorgsky–Ravel: Pictures at an Exhibition The predecessor to the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1862 by the father of the legendary Wagner conductor, Hans Richter, who was born in the town. The ensemble’s reputation was created by its Hungarian and international concerts as well as its recordings, several of which feature world premiè...res. Iván Madarász had his first piano concerto premièred in 2001, again with pianist Jenő Jandó as soloist, accompanied by the King Saint Stephen Symphony Orchestra. It was such a success that the director of the Győr ensemble, Gábor Baross, was encouraged to commission a second concerto to mark the fortieth anniversary of the orchestra achieving professional status. The composer says it is a one movement work that displays a range of different characters, written for more modest forces than the earlier piece, and has a chamber music character. Because of the nature of the genre, it has the feel of a kind of summing up. The Győr Philharmonic has been directed since 1997 by Ádám Medveczky who has already conducted several of Madarász’s works, including the première of his opera Final Waltz in 2003. Jenő Jandó is a member of the extraordinary generation of Hungarian pianists, who graduated – with Zoltán Kocsis, Dezső Ránki and András Schiff – from the class of the legendary Pál Kadosa to become major forces on the international scene. He has one of the largest discographies of any artist, which includes all the piano works of Bartók, Beethoven and Mozart as well as the keyboard chamber music of Bach, Haydn, Liszt and Schubert. Before the piano concerto, we will be treated to a concert overture by Antonín Dvořák which he conducted at his farewell concert in Prague before embarking on his journey to America in 1892. The jubilee concert concludes with one of the most regularly performed orchestral works in the repertoire.
