The Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra was formed in Vienna in 1986 at the initiative of Claudio Abbado who remains its artistic director. It was the first international youth orchestra to succeed in holding open auditions in the former East Block countries. In 1992 the orchestra was opened to musicians up to the age of 26 from anywhere in Europe, and as the pan-European youth orchestra, it is under the patronage of the European Council. From its inception, it has shown musical and technical standard...s that would put many professional ensembles to shame. Besides Claudio Abbado, the orchestra has been conducted among others by Pierre Boulez, Myung-Whun Chung, Péter Eötvös, Iván Fischer, Bernard Haitink, Kent Nagano, Mariss Jansons, Seiji Ozawa and Franz Welser-Möst. Ingo Metzmacher began his musical career as a pianist with the Ensemble Modern and then as a conductor. He has been the general music director of the Hamburg Staatsoper and principal conductor of The Nederlands Opera, and is currently chief conductor and artistic advisor of the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin. He made his reputation as a committed interpreter of the 20th century and contemporary repertoire but these days, frequently conducts late Romantic pieces as well. An example of these is the Symphony No. 3 by Gustav Mahler, which the composer finished in 1896. It is one of the most monumental works in the entire symphonic repertoire. In its fourth and fifth movements, the supreme English opera and concert singer Jane Irwin, who is noted for her Mahler performances, will sing the alto solo, a setting from Nietzsche’s Zarathustra.
