As is now customary on Guests in the Rehearsal Room nights, the audience will get to hear chamber music, including a number of curiosities, broadly interpreted as works for ensembles small and large. The French sensitivity and peerlessly rich palette of Debussy's Sonata from 1915 enraptured listeners by combining three instruments seldom grouped together by composers. For decades, Ingolf Dahl remained confined to the shadows: he took part in the world premières of Berg's opera Lulu and Hin...demith's work Matthais the Painter as vocal coach and chorus master. Even today, he is best known as the teacher of world-famous conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and the likewise widely renowned choral composer Morten Lauridsen. Part of a group of composers - including Ernst Krenek, Darius Milhaud, Arnold Schönberg and Igor Stravinsky - who emigrated to America and settled in Los Angeles, he also worked with József Szigeti.
One of the most original performers of the 20th century, Glenn Gould also tried his hand at composing music, although a bit of luck is required to hear his works, since they're not played too often. The fortuitous moment is being provided at this concert, where the audience will get the chance to hear a composition that brilliantly parodies Bach's fugues. One of Gould's great favourites was Richard Strauss, who wrote his uniquely arranged - employing 23 strings - musical essay on the relationship between man and war at the end of World War Two. Appearing in different guises during the masterful 23-minute interweaving of parts is the Funeral March theme from Beethoven's Eroica Symphony, which at the end of the work, marked in the score with the words 'In memoriam!', is played as originally written by the towering German composer.
