A star is born: now in his late twenties, conductor Gergely Madaras will soon reach the point when he no longer requires any introduction to the audience. Let’s keep our eyes open, because by following his career we may witness the flowering of a great talent. In terms of his career, 2011 proved to be a particularly rich, one might even say decisive, year – he earned the Junior Prima prize and was selected by Pierre Boulez as his assistant in his work at the Lucerne Festival Academy. The world-r...enowned composer and conductor has also invited Madaras for the ensuing two summers and appointed him as a permanent conductor. Also in 2011, Madaras emerged from a starting field of 230 to take one of the top three prizes in the world’s most prestigious competition for conductors in Besançon. In March 2012, he conducted the London Symphony Orchestra at the invitation of Sir Colin Davis, and has also conducted the no less historic Hallé Orchestra. However, the upward curve of his career is truly demonstrated by the invitations from the Paris Opera and the Ensemble InterContemporain he had to decline due to his busy schedule. The evening’s soloist is not as “advanced in years” as his conductor – Nicolas Namoradze was born in Georgia in 1992. From 2004, he studied in preparatory classes for exceptionally gifted pupils at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, and was admitted as a Fellow of the UK’s Royal Schools of Music with distinction in 2007. Celebrity status is a few years away, but we can be sure that his time will come as Brahms’s piano concerto is a large-scale work which even established artists – never mind young musicians – do not undertake lightly.
